In a future where aliens live as refugees under human control, their only path to recognition as human lies in earning social credits through a device known as Hellebore. Rick Apelscord, a talented young inventor fleeing his dying planet, comes to Earth seeking a future and citizenship. But when his Hellebore glitches, he is forced to cheat, run, and fight against a system designed for him to fail.
